Many pandemics came and went, but this one was surely the worst of them all and left a long-lasting impact on staying home in casual dress and feeling lazy every day. Don't you feel the same way? Mostly every field went fully digital in this period, and not only did that, but they found a great efficient outcome by doing work from home or learning from home. However, talking about "Drama", could be a tough topic to teach online since it’s about the presence of physicality. To keep that in mind, let’s try out some creative online activities which will help in the connection of the drama students and teachers bond and learn remotely by implementing with their kith and kins at home!
An Introduction game!
To open up the drama class, online teachers should ask their students to create an act that includes either their character or an act that justifies their name by performing that character’s dialogues. In other words, it’s like playing dumb charades, but here you don’t have to do any activity but one that shows yourself. By doing this small creative introduction, not only smiles would spread across, but teachers as well as students' might get an idea about their skills, so that by making this as a reference, they would start working on themselves moving forward.
An Opening Act!
Another great way to set the scene every day in online drama class would be to make an improv scene. Each and every person is to do an activity, and after hearing the pause sign from the teacher, everybody freezes. Then, from the one student, the scene starts. One person will justify their freezing action by saying one sentence of dialogue, and the next person should connect their freezing activity with the previous one by creating a dialogue that matches the original scene. For instance, one person is sitting with their head in their hands and opens the scene by saying, "mate, I’m frustrated as I’m out of ideas now!" The next person catches the rhythm by justifying their action of staring at the sky and says, "don’t worry mate, stars are shining bright today and one day our careers will be too!" So, have you noticed that the second person is either creating a scene of a writing room scenario or helping their best friend by supporting him? Isn’t that inspiring and creative? This online drama class game will improve people's improv skills, as well as the bond among team members.
A Question Game!
An effective activity to promote online drama classes is playing a question game. Well, don’t be confused. It seems simple by hearing the name, but it’s a bit tough while playing it because there is no script. It’s all emerging in the instant moment. So let's understand the concept of the game first. One person will start the game by asking a question related to the situation given by the teacher, and the other students are to follow the person not by answering the question but by asking another question. Interesting, right? Well, in this online drama game, there is no statement that finishes up with a full stop but always with a question mark. To give you an example, let’s say that the situation is visiting a fair. One person starts with "what would you want to ride first?" Another person will counter that question with, "What do you say which one is the best?" The first person then replies with, "What about a roller coaster ride?" And so on, the game continues with exciting and improvising questions in various situations.
A Prop Game!
It's a prop game! Of course, you have seen or at least heard of an artist playing with or making a scene out of props available to them. Yup, so it is the same here. The teacher will divide students into two or three teams according to the number of students in a class, and tell each team to go lookout for a prop, and whichever team finds it first gets not only extra points but also gets to decide who’s going to present the first act. Now the rules for prop use are that the use of a prop should be animistic rather than just a prop, and there should be no repetition of usage of the prop, not more than 3 times, in a single situation. Well, that would be so much fun, right? People use the prop in novel ways to create a dramatic scene.
The Audience Game!
Lastly, the audience game! Well, it is difficult to get an audience out there in an online scenario, but for the game, people or participants should ask their friends and family about the situations. And the situations, of course, would start with "what if?" So, the concept of this game is that the audience would suggest their "what if" situations, and participants would have to manifest those situations within 5-10 minutes of a scene. The judges here would be the audience too since every performance would be posted online for judging, and whichever post would get the most thumbs up would be the winner of this creative, exciting, and fun online drama game. To clear you out, for example, the situation might be like "what if our current president were to switch with another country’s?'' or "what if books would speak?" These are just random examples, but trust me, this game would be so creative and fun, and interactive due to the involvement of outside audiences which will promote awareness about online drama classes also.
All in all, the main purpose of these online drama activities is to spread happiness as well as learn to connect with everything going on outside, live in the moment, and carry out the task no matter what the situation is. Do try this in your online lectures and spread productivity and happiness.
