This course is open to all levels, from beginner through to advanced. (Read until the end for info. on course times and schedules.)
In my classes, I create a safe space for energy to be moved freely, for self expression to be unlimited and for the body to let any held emotion or pent up stagnation move freely through it. This course is about reconnecting to your own intuitive movement; my goal is to empower you to feel confident in your own innate ability to move your body as it needs to be; to reconnect with your body's cues, its needs and its desires. Through syncing the rhythm of our breath to our movement, I invite you to open up in places of tension, to create space within your energetic body and to exert any energy that needs to be released. In each flow we will dive deeper into the power of the breath and the life force energy behind your unique practice, enabling you to set an intention and embody it throughout the practice, listening along the way, learning to become a witness. The purpose of this course is to learn to flow through whatever may be showing up in your space. To embody the true definition of Yoga, which is Union, without any attachment to the physical Asanas (postures) as we go along. Progression is measured by the embodiment that you feel within yourself and your deepening capacity to move in tandem with your breath, rather than in resistance to it. I place a strong focus on the Prahna - the energy - behind the practice and the physical movement. I will be your guide throughout this course, but my purpose is to hand the power back TO you; to enable you to feel empowered in your OWN intuition, void of external validation, of attachment to outcome and of outside voices.
In each class we will focus on a different theme, covering the physical, emotional, energetic and spiritual side of the practice. In each week I will talk more about the spiritual aspect of the week's theme at the beginning of the class so as to give you a greater lens into the connection between the physical, emotional and energetic parts of the practice as a whole.
For example, in Week 1 we will begin with the energetic focus on the Root Chakra; on a physical level, we will be creating space in the lower body, opening up through the hips in a gentle manner and grounding. This practice will be more tender and we will take the time to enter and exit each pose, focusing on the transitions between each posture and how our breath is during those transitional points.
Week 2 the energetic focus will be on both the Sacral and Solar Plexus. Physically, we will be easing into some deeper hip opening, but adding in some dynamic movement in order to feel the flow of energy throughout these areas of the body, rather than remaining static.
In week 3, we will concentrate on the Heart Chakra. This is a week where you will see a lot of progress in the single class alone; we will begin with some gentle shoulder mobility and gradually progress into deeper back-bends, meaning not that we will become contortionists in the space of an hour(!), but that we will concentrate on opening up through the chest. In this class we will focus heavily on breathing INTO areas of our body, of creating a deeper mind-body connection and enhancing our ability to focus on the small muscles and ligaments in our body, where we feel each stretch and how it is impacting the rest of our body and mind.
In week 4 we move up to the Throat Chakra. After an introduction to heart-openers in last week, this week focuses on moving more freely, with more fluidity and more in-tune with your own individual needs. This area of the body is about self expression and stepping into one's authenticity, and that is exactly what we will uncover in this session.
The final week (5) is a completely free, intuitive flow. While the basis of the flow is the Crown Chakra, I invite you to take into consideration everything that you have learnt, about the practice, yourself, and the two intertwined and create an embodied dance of the two, in union... In Yoga. The notion of this may seem intimidating in the first week, but the "objective" of this course, if there is one, is to release judgement, constriction and uncertainty that we hold over oursleves and give our bodies permission to flow, with whatever arises, whatever makes its way to us before, throughout and after the process, both on and off of the mat. The purpose of this final session is to feel into the energy circulating throughout your entire body, from Root to Crown and to reclaim your power in that.
My primary aim first and foremost is to ensure that you feel safe, comfortable and able to express yourself within the space that I have created. The way that I practice Yoga myself, and the general "structure" of my flows is entirely intuitive; I seek to let go of the idea of rigidity within the practice and instead endeavour to create Freedom Within the Form - to rid ourselves of limitations and to go beyond what we think we are capable of, what we think our limits are and what we perceive to restrict us and hold us back from edging further towards our full potential.
I will always ask whether there are any specific postures that you may wish to incorporate into the course as a whole or in any particular classes, whether you require any modifications to be made and we will start each class off with a small "table talk", where the space is open to bring up any physical tension that is presently stored within your body, any mental anguish that you may be holding on to or any emotional release that you feel would be beneficial.
The times of the sessions are currently set as an idea and can be subject to change to fit in with the schedules of participants. That being said, it will stay at the same time every week, so any alteration must be made and organised a week in advance to the course's start date. Many thanks for your understanding!
