Poetry whether it’s familiar or unseen, looks so simple at the first glance as well as one will find it beautiful when someone is telling it in a smooth way; however, when new poetry is never seen before arrives in front of your eyes to get decoded by you in a task or reading, it gets really sweaty. There are 6 steps to look out for if you get stuck in a similar kind of situation which will make it a piece of cake to decipher any strange or any type of poetry as a matter of fact. So, let’s understand these 6 steps to reach the conclusion of the unseen poem!
To begin with, don’t get too hasty because it will only waste your time. Take a deep breath and try to skim the unseen poem not once but twice, at least to get an idea of it. You will unquestionably be more fruitful if you utilize this time wisely. Try not to hurry through the text, restless to begin composing. Given the poem you've been relegated to, it may be moderately clear; however, there is an extraordinary arrangement that can be barely noticeable assuming you attempt to get as far as possible as quickly as could be expected. Now, after you've formed an opinion about it, try to imitate it by reading it aloud. It’s important because it gives you a different perspective. You’ll understand the real tone in which the poetry might be written in the eyes of the Poet.
Well, like everything in this world has been made with a structure and showcases some type of form, so does a poem. It is up to you to figure that out, and in order to do so, you should have a basic understanding of the structures available for poems such as haiku, rhymed, limerick, or free verse.
Sonnets have musicality. One of the conventional contrasts between ordinary writing and verse is the use of cadence and metre. A sonnet's metre is the normal cadence that it embraces. Contemporary verse occasionally deviates from traditional metre displays, but metre plays an important role in the verse you will learn in school.
At the end of the day, these various sorts of poetry have various structures as well as they appear to be unique on the page. Some are long, some are short. Regardless of whether you can't sort out which specialised name to utilise, remark on what the poem resembles on the page since a few sonnets have been composed to have a particular shape, purposefully. Keep in mind that poets use specific structures and forms to convey their sayings, so in order to decipher the meaning, the structure is the vital step in understanding any unseen poems in 2022.
Of course, the language is crucial. Without it, one cannot decode the real interpretation of beautifully shaped writing. It’s not music that you can vibe with beats without understanding the language. The language is similar to improvements and furniture in that they vary the meaning and make it understandable. Sometimes you’ll get to see more than two languages in a single poem, so you have to know those words and their meanings to understand the meaning behind their usage of them.
Take a watch out for any cryptic symbols and metaphors, rhythmic structures, and similar words like a simile. These differences are a poet's playthings, so when analysing an unseen poem, ask yourself questions like, "Do these words add extra impact?" Or are they used for another meaning? Do these words create any kind of specific tone to guide you on a different path?
If the words of an unseen poem are written in the feeling of anger or remorse of an author, that you can witness by figuring out some particular tone used by the writer in some corners or through unique words, so keep an eye out for that also. For instance, if one is in a happy mode, then he or she will use cheerful words like joy and smile widely through a cheerful tone, whereas if one is angry or remorseful, you’ll notice capital letters or a dull vibe going on in some lines, respectively.
Talking about punctuation, the first thought that comes to our minds is the articulate Emily Dickinson! Take out any of her poems and you'll find multiple usages of hyphens in her poems, and not just like random usage, but they have a great impact on the words by involving vital pauses. Furthermore, if one understands the punctuation, such as where to pause and where to take a breath, reading the unseen poem and understanding the rhythm of that particular ballad will be a breeze.
The final step in analysing any strange poem would be to get the meaning of words by using all the above-mentioned steps and determining what the poet was really trying to say by writing this bunch of words in a unique manner, whether in the form of limericks or haiku. If you heard one saying about books, it is that every book differs from reader to reader. In other words, a book is one but it depicts various interpretations which differ from reader to reader. The same concept applies to poems also.
In a nutshell, by following these 6 basic steps, one will get a better understanding of given unseen poem examples. However, since each and every person is going through different mindsets and scenarios at the moment of reading or analysing the poem, the answers, in the end, might be different from the poet’s point of view, and that’s alright because that’s the beauty of a poem that it somehow relates to every person in different ways.
